Neurodivergence in the counselling room

Neurodivergence in the counselling room

This interactive CPD session equips counsellors to develop competence and expertise in supporting neurodivergent clients. We will take time to explore the nuanced ways neurodiversity shapes the counselling experience, deepening participants’ insight into what neurodivergent clients seek from therapy and building confidence in neuro‑affirming practice. While there is a particular focus on autism and ADHD, we’ll also address a broader spectrum of neurodivergent experiences and examine their intersection with Christian faith and practice. The day includes:

  • Foundations of autism and ADHD
  • Client expectations and therapeutic goals
  • Transference and counter‑transference considerations
  • Life contexts beyond the counselling setting
  • Adaptive practices and creative interventions
  • Neurodivergence with the Christian faith tradition

Learning outcomes

This training will help delegates to:

  • Develop competency in neuro‑affirming practice, enabling confident and welcoming support for neurodivergent clients.
  • Consider how neurodivergence influences the therapeutic relationship and reflect on its impact in the counselling room.
  • Identify common issues and relational dynamics that arise in the counselling room with neurodivergent clients.
  • Apply adaptable strategies to the therapeutic process, including creative tools for helping neurodivergent clients make sense of their experiences.
  • Explore the intersection of neurodivergence and spirituality, with a particular focus on expressions of faith within a Christian context.
