Types of coaching/mentoring

Whilst there is generic professional coaching/mentoring training, and all professional coaches/mentors will have undertaken this, many coaches specialise in different areas. For this they may have undertaken extra training, professional development and study, and normally practise in a chosen field, developing specialist experience.

Some coaches and mentors work creatively, for example, using photography, sand work, poetry or artwork (not art therapy). Others prefer to work mainly using talking.

Coaches and mentors are trained in differing methodologies and competencies. Coaching draws on different disciplines, including psychology, performance training, personal growth and development, counselling and psychotherapy. Christian coaches also have Christian specific approaches. Some coaches have an integrated approach. Speak to your coach about what kind of work they can offer to you.

The most important part of any helping work is the professional working relationship and trust built between you and the helper. Many different forms of coaching and mentoring can work, and not everyone prefers the same methods.

ACC seeks to ensure that all coaches and mentors work to ethical standards and also the Churchill Framework for coaching and mentoring, ensuring a spiritually healthy approach.
